Mr Yunus Chamda (Emfuleni), one of the co-founders of TWBSA, reminded us of the strength of grass-roots, community projects. TWBSA is a project funded and supported by local communities in Hawaii and South Africa and it has been growing in success for 8 consecutive years.

Later in June, 130 educators joined TWBSA in Mthatha. The team left with an agreement to consider spending 2 weeks there next year. A week of incredible learning and success left us in no doubt as to how useful and needed these workshops are for teachers in this region.

In our third and final workshop in Port Shepstone in July, some 90+ teachers of maths and science from Ugu District shared time with their Hawaii colleagues. The closing ceremony on Thursday was an occasion of much joy and many tears. Local teachers spoke of determination, passion, and the responsibility our profession has for the future of the nation.

It echoed a line in my closing speech, “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?”
